Mental health first aiders in the workplace and in the community are largely non–health-professionals who can:
> promote awareness of mental health issues amongst their peers and within their organisation
> recognise those affected by mental health problems
> offer initial help and guidance towards professional support
> help to tackle the prejudice and stigma associated with mental health problems
> improve the outcomes for those affected, their families, friends, colleagues and employers.
Mental Health First Aid is a name for the help given to someone experiencing
a mental health problem before professional help is obtained. The idea developed
originally in Australia, has been adopted in many countries, and is now available
in England.
The aims are:
> to preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
> to provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into
a more serious state
One in four British adults will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year, yet most people have little knowledge of mental health matters.
Mental health problems can affect people at any time of life in different ways. They affect not only individuals and their families, but friends, work colleagues and employers too. Many people suffer a mental illness for a long time before they seek help.
It is possible to provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem. MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help, and to guide a person towards appropriate help.
This course is delivered over two days. Each day involves 6 hours of facilitated learning. Certificates are awarded shortly after the course by NMHDU England
Can anyone attend the training?
Yes, anyone can attend an MHFA training session. There are no selection criteria and the course is aimed at ordinary people, not professionals.
Who is behind the training?
English MHFA has been developed by NIMHE, the National Institute for Mental
Health in England, in consultation with Mind and Health Scotland, based on
the Scottish programme which started ahead of the English programme.
Official MHFA instructors use resources and materials supplied by the National
Mental Health Development unit (NMHDU ).
Where does training take place?
I am in the fortunate position of having sufficient MHFA work for the rest of 2010.
